SCCM – Image Creation Tips

Image Creation Tips

Install a fresh install of Windows. During the OOBE setup hit Ctrl+Shift+F3 to enter audit mode. This will log you in as the local administrator. Set up your image in audit mode.

Manually install your SCCM client last.

If you need to reboot for an application install make sure you re-enter audit mode after the reboot.

Clear out your temp folders.

The Start Menu for Windows 8/8.1 is at “C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs”

For staff computers I find it helps avoid confusion when there are less icons on the start menu.

To remove the builtin Windows 8.1 apps I use a script that I found here.

Use the Powershell Cmdlet Export-StartLayout to configure you start screen for all users.

  • Set up your start screen exactly how you want it
  • Run: Export-StartLayout -Path “C:\users\Administrator\Desktop\appsFolderLayout.bin” -as BIN
  • Copy appsFolderLayout.bin to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows

That will make every new user that logs in have a start screen that looks exactly like the one you exported.
